Honda is competing with the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf with the Civic GX.  It’s new appeal comes from the fact that it runs on Compressed Natural Gas (also known as CNG) and can qualify buyers for $4,000 tax credit because of the lower emissions. According to DriveClean.ca.gov, “Driving a compressed natural gas vehicle reduces smog-forming and greenhouse gas emissions as well as our dependence on foreign oil. Although the range between fills is slightly less than their gasoline counterparts, the benefits such as HOV lane access, cheaper fuel and the ability to fuel at home can outweigh this seemingly negative attribute.”

The Civic GX is equipped with a 1.8-liter, i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine that produces 113 horsepower @ 6300 rpm and 109 lb-ft. of torque @ 4300 rpm, and achieves an EPA-estimated2 city/highway fuel economy of 24/36 miles per Gasoline-Gallon Equivalent (GGE). Maximum fuel-tank capacity is 8.0 GGE at 3,600 pounds per square inch. A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard.

Built on a high-rigidity, unit-body platform, the Civic is designed to deliver precise and refined handling performance with its fully independent MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension designs. A sweeping roofline and a sleek windshield angle convey an advanced, one-motion profile. Nissan has announced its third largest recall in company history, affecting 2.14 million light trucks and SUVs worldwide, according to Automotive News. The recall involves a potentilly faulty ignition relay that could lead to engine problems on Nissan Pathfinder, Armada and Xterra SUVs, Titan and Frontier pickup trucks, and Infiniti QX56 SUVs. The majority of the vehicles affected are Japanese market units,  but the recall does include 738,276 vehicles sold in the United States, and 23,252 sold in Canada.

Three new 1.9-litre diesel engines have been added to the range, each boasting 62.8mpg and 119g/km in saloon form, despite varying power outputs. The Convertible and Sportwagon estate get 

the engines, too, although economy and emissions suffer a bit because of the extra weight. For the saloon, the low CO2 means first year road tax is free. The old 118bhp and 148bhp 1.9-litre diesels are replaced by quicker and cleaner 128bhp and 158bhp twin-turbo versions. But best of all is the 178bhp TTiD4 driven here.

Chrysler may join Nissan, Ford, Fisker and Tesla in winning a share of federal loans to convert old factories to greener-car production.

Automotive News reports that Chrysler has applied to the Department of Energy for approximately $10 billion in low-interest loans, to be used for retooling plants. The monies were made available as a part of the Bush Administration's 2007 energy plan, which set aside $25 billion in funds to be loaned to companies changing over plants to assembly of lower-emissions and zero-emissions engines and cars.

“The vehicles are the remainder of a 14 million-unit recall that covered 1993-2003 F-Series pickups, 1995-2003 Windstars, 1995-2002 Explorers and 1995-2003 Rangers that were built with faulty cruise control units,” writes Autoblog. “The units could leak onto the vehicles' anti-lock brake system and cause a fire even if the vehicle is off.”

The fact that the fire can occur even though the vehicle is off is key. As we reported on the Ford recall, some consumers assumed their cars were fine because their cruise control worked.  But, some cars caught fire while they were parked in their owners’ garages – leading to house fires.

The matte paint once reserved for cars headed for crash testing is showing up on the highest of high-end models. The new Mercedes-Benz CLS sedan and Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale coupe can be ordered with matte finishes, and the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento supercar concept showed up with matte paint last month at the Paris auto show.

The 2012 Nissan GT-R, which arrives in the United States next year, gets its biggest overhaul since the high-performance sports car was relaunched in 2007--with a premium placed on more horsepower and better fuel efficiency.

Nissan Motor Co. boosts engine output to 530 hp, from 485 in the current model. Fuel economy improves to 20 mpg, from 19.5 mpg, under Japanese testing standards.

The Problem: The hydraulic brake system houses a seal at the end of the brake master cylinder piston, which moves in conjunction with the driver’s braking efforts. Toyota says its genuine brake fluid possesses a certain quantity of lubrication polymers crucial in keeping the seal in working order. Replacement brake fluid with insufficient amounts of the polymers may not saturate the seal adequately and cause it to deform, eventually leading to fluid leakage, a soft brake pedal, and a warning light. According to Automotive News, 600,000 vehicles in Japan and 190,000 in other markets are affected as well.

• Nissan LEAF information hub. Today, Microsoft also announced that the 2011 Nissan LEAF touchscreen information hub is powered by Windows Embedded Automotive technology, providing drivers and passengers with a navigation system and electricity charging station locator. It also shares power consumption monitoring information with drivers, and enables easy in-car climate monitoring.
• Fiat. Fiat Group Automobiles is bringing the Fiat 500 to the North American market in 2010. The 500 includes Fiat's Blue&Me technology, powered by Microsoft, a media gateway that integrates mobile phones and digital music players into audio system and controls of the car, allowing voice control of these devices by the driver.
• Alpine. Alpine Electronics of America Inc. delivered advanced in-vehicle navigation systems, powered by Windows Embedded Automotive, to car manufacturers, including satellite-guided, turn-by-turn directions and useful features, such as voice-guided controls, and information on more than 7 million points of interest.

200 sedan is key car in Chrysler comeback

The 200, a reskinned and re-engineered version of the slow-selling Sebring, reaches dealerships late this year. At a meeting in Orlando last month, Chrysler told dealers it expects to sell about 80,000 200s annually, not including fleet sales, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

Said Rebecca Lindland, an IHS analyst: "They have a lot of ground to make up in terms of restoring that product."

However a recent survey on attitudes towards electric cars by the website Parkers.co.uk showed that of the 500 people that they asked about the new phenomenon, two thirds of the people said they would not buy an electric car.

How To Make Your 2011 Chevy Volt Drive Like a Tesla Roadster

GM's engineers have tuned the control software to mimic the behavior of a standard gasoline-engine car fitted with an automatic transmission. There's the standard idle creep at a stoplight, and if you lift off the accelerator, the car coasts freely, with little regenerative braking.

That's not how the Tesla works. Its regenerative braking kicks in as soon as you lift off the accelerator, and taking your foot off completely slows the car almost as rapidly as braking. But Chevrolet's engineers have provided a similar ability in its Voltec powertrain: It's the "Low" setting on the "transmission selector". And when it's paired with the "Sport" power mode, which gives more aggressive accelerator response, it's the best way to turn your Volt into a mini-Tesla. Read the rest of this article here.

A study reveals the real consumption of the Chevrolet Volt

A separate study by the folks at Motor Trend in the U.S. has managed to reveal the real average consumption of the Chevrolet Volt. According to blogger Jonny Lieberman numbers with normal driving, as circulated a typical day, , the Volt has a consumption of 127 miles per gallon, about 1.85 liters to travel 100km .

250 smart Electric Vehicles Arrive in USA

The smart fortwo electric drive (smart EDs) vehicles look just like its combustion engine counterpart with the same exterior footprint but is fully electric and powered by a 30 kW drive motor and 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. Using a standard 220V outlet, it takes only three and a half hours to charge the battery from 20 to 80 percent of its capacity and less than eight hours to fully charge it. The battery can also be charged using a common household 110V outlet. The vehicles can reach highway speeds and offer a range of 82 miles on a single charge.

The zero emission smart fortwo ED is manufactured in Hambach, France, and is designed to be environmentally-friendly by having 95% of it’s parts made from materials that are recyclable.

Currently a fleet of 250 smart fortwo EDs have just started arriving in the U.S, which is part of phase two of their worldwide deployment of producing 1,500 cars for selected markets.  Phase one included of 100 electric drive vehicles in London in 2007.

Full series production will not start until the 2012 model year.

Nissan May Offer Free Car Loans To Leaf Buyers For Long Trips

If you’re one of the many who signed up for a 2011 Nissan Leaf, you may be suffering from “range anxiety” (the fear of running out of power in the middle of nowhere). To help you overcome this, Nissan is coming up with a program that would give Leaf buyers a longer-range alternative.

This program would give Leaf owners a no-cost loan of a conventionally powered vehicle that could be used for treks that went beyond the capacity of the 100-mile Leaf.  This loaner car option is still in the works, so it’s not yet clear exactly how it would work.

Under this program, the Leaf owner would get a car rental package that would cover the use of an Xterra SUV or Altima sedan for a week.  Right now, it’s not clear whether the rental would be handled through a participating Nissan dealer or through an independent rent-a-car company.

Chevy Volt Drivetrain Controversy

Earlier this week, GM revealed the full details on the drivetrain of the Chrevrolet Volt. This highly-anticipated vehicle has simultaneously been subjected to one of the most transparent and secretive development programs in recent memory. While automotive journalists and the mainstream press were brought out to R&D labs, prototype test-drives, and carefully scripted and handled interviews with engineers and PR reps, key details of the vehicle's systems and drivetrains were kept nebulously vague. All the while, GM was making such grand pronouncements as 230 miles-per-gallon, and repeatedly stressing that it is a pure "electric vehicle" despite the obvious presence of the on-board gasoline-powered range-extender.

For a long time, GM claimed, either implicitly or explicitly, there was no direct mechanical connection between the range-extender and the drive wheels. The engine was there strictly to keep the battery charge levels topped up. Now comes news that at around 70 miles per hour and above, there can be a direct mechanical connection between the engine and drive wheels.

According to The Detroit News, Daimler AG announced it will be recalling about 85,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The German automaker�s recall is to fix a problem with the power steering system that can cause the driver of the vehicle to lose steering control. The recall, according to the story, affects the 2010 C-Class Model 204, E-Class Model 212, and the 2010 and 2011 of the E-Class coupe/cabriolet Model 207.

Recall Alert: 2010 Cadillac SRX

General Motors is recalling 3,459 2010 Cadillac SRX crossovers because the power-steering pressure line may have been damaged during manufacture, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If the line is damaged, power-steering fluid could leak. If enough fluid leaks, the driver will hear noise from the power-steering pump, and steering the vehicle will require more effort. If the fluid sprays onto a hot engine, it could cause an engine compartment fire, according to NHTSA.

The 2010 Scion xD has stand-out styling that may appeal to smaller families. This four-door hatchback seats five, according to Scion, but we could fit only two child-safety seats in the backseat.

For the Car Seat Check, we use a rear-facing infant-safety seat, a convertible child-safety seat and a high-back booster seat, all made by Graco. The front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position for a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-8 passenger. The child seats are installed in the second row and, if available, third row. The booster seat sits behind the driver’s seat, and the infant seat and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat.

 had the opportunity to take the 2011 Hyundai Sonata on a long weekend drive — we’re talking nearly seven hours each way — to my friends’ wedding in Telluride, Colo. The White House wants to walk green while it talks green, which is why the government's purchasing department is now placing an order for 100 electric cars to be distributed through agencies later in the year.

The New York Times reports the Obama administration's executive order from October 2009 mandates that federally owned and operated vehicles do their part to to cut carbon emissions, and EVs--as well as hybrid cars--are in the plan.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- Allstate Insurance Co. has sued Toyota Motor Corp., seeking to recover more than $3 million the insurer and affiliates paid in claims for accidents linked to unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.

The lawsuit, filed last Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, marks a relatively new front in the wave of U.S. civil litigation piling up against the Japanese automaker for economic losses stemming from complaints about Toyotas that have sped out of control and crashed.

                         "We are expected to be one of several insurance companies that are taking this action,"                         Allstate spokeswoman Christina Loznicka told Reuters on Monday.

 

                          “Toyota has not found a single case in which electronics would lead to sudden unintended acceleration,” Steve St. Angelo, the company's North American chief quality officer, said in a conference call yesterday.

Luxury Cars: Although a report from Automotive News stated that Maybach future is in doubt, it appears that the folks from Automobile Magazine found out something new. According to them, the Maybach brand is actually profitable (on paper), although a maximum of 300 vehicles are sold per year. Now, the word is that Daimler Joachim Schmidt, recently brought from Far East to run company's sales and marketing, sees new opportunities for this exclusive brand on big markets such as China, North America, Middle East and Russia.

As you may know already, the current generation is based on the old Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but the new Maybach cars will use the new platform which will be used on the 2012 model. Also, the range will be extended and Maybach will receive a four-door coupe as well as a long-wheelbase convertible. It is believed that all the models will be powered by the same 6.0-liter V12 engine delivering over 600 hp and mated to a nine (9)-speed automatic transmission. And the big surprise: Maybach will also offer a hybrid model, which will share the same technology with the upcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hybrid.
